Geography

Subject leader: Mrs E Longden

Our aim at Sacred Heart is to inspire children’s curiosity, interest and appreciation for the world that we live in. We intend to equip children with the geographical knowledge to develop their skills through studies of places, people and natural and human environments. Through our teaching, we intend to provoke thought, questions and to encourage children to discover answers to their own questions through exploration and research to enable them to gain a greater understanding and knowledge of the world and their place in it. The intent of the Geography curriculum is outlined and detailed in the Geography Progression Map which is organised into knowledge and skills, with the aim of ensuring children build upon their learning at the appropriate stage and revisit key learning to ensure it sticks or it becomes part of long-term learning. Our Geography curriculum aims to excite the children and allow them to develop their skills as geographers. The Geography curriculum is planned so that there are opportunities for cross-curricular links to be made to ensure the children have occasions where they can apply their knowledge and understanding.

Where possible we offer opportunities for children to explore the outdoor learning environments, both within the school grounds and local community

Our aim is that children leave Sacred Heart as confident geographers who have a good understanding of key vocabulary as well as developing their geographical enquiry skills.

The following key geographical concepts are taught within and across units and year groups:
